2007
UEFA U21 Championship At a Glance Four stages: preliminary, qualifying,
play-offs and the final tournament. The
preliminary round: Completed June 2006; eight two-legged knockout ties played
between the 16 nations with the lowest coefficients. The
qualifying round: Eight winners and 34 other nations compete in the qualifying
round (August and September). 14 groups of three teams, each team play their pool
opponents once with the group leaders moving to the semi-finals. The
tournament: Seven winners of 14 two-legged ties in October will advance to
the June 2007 finals alongside hosts Netherlands, where they will be divided into
two groups of four.
Tie-Breakers:
split by (a) overall goal difference (b) overall goals scored (c) number of away
goals scored (d) highest number of coefficient points (e) drawing of lots. If
two teams are dead level before they meet in their last group fixtures and draw,
a penalty shoot-out will instead be held should first place be at stake. Head-to-head
record will not be used as teams do not play home and away. Qualifying
