UEFA Euro 2004 Final Portugal 0-1 Greece Lisbon (Luz)
- 04/07/04 - 19:45 Scoring Summary: 57' Charisteas
Sunday, July 4, 2004 - Mark your calendars. History was made when the unfancied
Greek National Team dramatically beat Portugal 1-0 at the Estadio de Luz in Lisbon
to win the UEFA Euro 2004 Championship. The Greeks had a most improbable run,
beating France in the quarterfinals and tournament favorites the Czech Republic
in the semifinals. Not only did the Greeks knock off these major teams, they beat
tournament host Portugal twice including the final and tied Spain in the group
stages. Greek
forward Angelos Charisteas scored a header goal from close range off a corner
kick to seal the victory for the Greek invaders, who began the tournament as 80-1
outsiders (with some bookies having them at 250-1 odds).
